Woodfall Primary School Children Get On Their Bikes!

Author: Helen Hogg Published: 5th May 2016 09:06

On Monday 25th April, fifty-seven Year 5 children at Woodfall Primary School in Neston began their Bikeability cycle training programme.

What is Bikeability? It's like cycling proficiency, but better! It's about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today's roads with confidence.

The government-approved Bikeability training was delivered by instructors from Cycle Experience, who taught the children how to check their own bikes for roadworthiness at the start of the first session, to ensure that they were safe for them to complete the training on.

Over four wet and windy days, the Year Five children took part in Bikeability Levels 1 and 2, taking them from the basics of balance and control on the school playground, all the way to planning and making independent journeys on the roads near to the school.

Bikeability Week has become an annual event offered to Year Five children at Woodfall and this year over 95% of children in the year group took part.

Here's what some of them had to say at the end of the course:

"... Bikeability was really good ... I learnt lots of new things and it got me out on the roads on my bike." Gemma

"...Bikeablity... has inspired me to ride my bike on the roads more." Saffron

"Making sure your bike is roadworthy...is so important and the instructors have taught me to do that." Rowan

"I never knew that you had to look behind you before turning...now I feel safer on my bike." Heidi.
