Australia Shark Attack Victim Was From Neston

Doreen Collyer, the latest victim of a fatal shark attack off the Australian coast, had emigrated there from Neston.

Doreen Collyer had emigrated from Neston five years ago.

Mrs Collyer's husband David, son Ben and daughter Sarah were all keen cricketers and the family were well known at Neston Cricket Club in Parkgate. David captained the 1st team in 2003 and Sarah played for England.

Mr and Mrs Collyer had moved to Australia five years ago to be close to their grand-daughter Daisy, after Ben and his wife moved there.  The Collyers had recently taken Australian citizenship.

Mrs Collyer was Scuba diving in Perth on Sunday when she was attacked and killed by a 16ft great white shark, according to ABC, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Mrs Collyer held an advanced open water qualification. ABC reported that she was pulled from the water by her diving partner but her injuries proved fatal at the scene.

David Collyer described her as a 'beautiful person' and 'loving wife.'  Prior to moving to Australia from Neston, Mrs Collyer had been a professor in the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Chester for the previous 15 years.

Professor Annette McIntosh-Scott, from the University, called Mrs Collyer a "hugely valued and loved member of staff, who will be remembered as someone with a real commitment and passion for teaching and child healthcare - her students were at the heart of all she did."

Once in Australia, Mrs Collyer went to lecturer in nursing at the Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth.  Her colleague Arashad Omari, acting vice chancellor there, said she was a "much-loved and respected colleague, mentor and teacher."

The attack took place in the Mindarie area of Perth.  Authorities have taken steps to close the beaches and water in the vicinity whilst attempts are made to capture the shark.
