Neston Recreation Centre is in the Swim as Councillor Confirms Future Investment

Published: 20th December 2016 11:16

Match funding has been obtained from Sport England to the tune of £500,000, for improvements at Neston Recreation Centre.

As revealed on AboutMyArea in November, Cheshire West and Chester Council and their partner organisation Brio Leisure are keen to see improvements take place soon.  To that end, a funding bid was made to Sport England which has now been confirmed.

Councillor Louise Gittins, member for Little Neston and Burton and also cabinet member for Communities & Wellbeing, said: "I am extremely pleased to tell council that we have been offered a grant of £500,000 from Sport England to match significant further investment by Brio Leisure in Neston Recreation centre.

"The funding will improve the swimming pool changing rooms, provide a new gym and make the building much more attractive and accessible.

"The future programme will provide more opportunities for the community to use the facility as well as enhancing it for Neston High School.

"We are extremely grateful to Sport England for recognising the importance that an enhanced facility would mean to the health and wellbeing for the people of Neston and the surrounding area."

Neston Councillor Andy Williams pressed for more information on the timescale.  Cllr Gittins said: "The full funding package needs to be confirmed and finalised. Following this it is anticipated that start on site would be late May/June subject to planning permission being granted for the new reception."

The improvements look likely to dovetail neatly with the opening of the new Neston High School building, currently on target to welcome the new school year in September 2017.

Great news - thanks to all concerned for pushing for the long overdue improvements - it will be so much appreciated by all the regular users of existing facilities - Happy New Year!

Whilst these improvements are long overdue, the school should be using it less or Brio should be charging less for their membership. Twice this year I've ventured up there to take my son to Tae Kwon Do and the class has needed to be cancelled as the school has decided it needed to use the hall for a parents evening ? They shouldn't be allowed to using the Rec facilities for anything other than sporting related activities and even then not at the expense of Brio members/paying members of the facilities, they have Stewart Hall and their own gym for these purposes
