On Sunday 15th January, children from Years 5 and 6 from St Winefride's Catholic Primary School in Neston, represented Cheshire Phoenix in a national basketball competition held at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham.
The excited and eager athletes took to the court playing teams from Surrey and Leeds first. Drawing with both of these teams (Surrey 4-4) and Leeds (6-6), the children played with fantastic team spirit and encouraged one another. Needless to say, after warming up, the children went on to play teams from Glasgow and Leicester, winning all of their remaining games.
The children showed outstanding skill in their final game, winning 22-4.
Cheshire Phoenix (St Winnie's) finished a magnificent 2nd place in the competition, missing out narrowly by 1 point to the winners, Leeds, with whom the children drew earlier on in the day. Delighted, the boys and girls were awarded a ‘golden' basketball, which sits in pride of place in their impressive cabinet full of sporting trophies, medals and achievements.
The teacher and parents who accompanied the children from St Winefride's reported that they were an absolute joy to watch. They showed great motivation, determination and most important of all, great friendship, throughout the competition.
Sarah Gilmore, Schools and Community Officer for Cheshire Phoenix commented: "The children from St Winefride's played tremendously well. They represented their school and our club with great passion and determination; they were a joy to watch."
The children stayed to watch the BBL cup final in the arena and enjoyed watching Newcastle Eagles secure a win, becoming BBL cup champions, against Glasgow Rocks. It was a fabulous experience for the children at St Winefride's and they represented their school and Cheshire Phoenix wonderfully.
