On Wednesday January 18, Neston's St. Winefride's RC Primary School football team won the 7-a-side small schools football competition at Frodsham Leisure Centre.
Seven teams took part, with all teams playing each other once. St. Winefride's were strong in all of the games, pressuring the opposition on the small playing surface and playing neat, sharp passing to open up the defence.
We won the first game 1-0 against a stubborn Ashton Hayes, although the margin of victory didn't reflect the domination from the winning team.
Next saw another 1-0 to St. Winefride's against Norley, with the game mirroring their first match.
Horn's Mill provided tougher opposition, however St. Winefride's were always on top and came out 2-0 winners, with an eye on their next encounter against Weaver Vale, who ended up runners up in the tournament.
Although our defence held firm, much more pressure was applied by Weaver Vale. Despite this, the boys played superbly and ran our comfortable 4-0 winners, with great through balls and clinical finishing proving to be the difference.
Our second to last game saw us play Neston Primary, the team that we were unfortunate to get beatenby on penalties in the last cluster competition. We went 2-0 up and were comfortable, and although a late goal from Neston (and the first that we conceded) made for a nervy last minute, we came out 2-1 winners.
Our last game was against Kingsley St. John's, who tried their best but were overrun 4-0 by a jubilant St. Winefride's who knew at this point that the winner's medals were theirs.
The victory means progression to the next stage of the competition to be played at Crewe Alexandra's training complex this week.
