Community at its Best - the CH64 Big Lunch in the Sun
Published: 19th June 2017 09:40 |
The 8th annual CH64 Big Lunch saw hundreds of people gathering at Stanney Fields Park in Neston, this year celebrating The Great Get Together.
NCYC volunteers had their work cut out for them in the heat, but carried on and did a splendid job.
The initiative was conceived to mark the first anniversary of the death of MP Jo Cox, to 'encourage communities large and small to come together to celebrate friendship, fun and acceptance of all.' Here in Neston, the event was entirely organised and funded by members of the CH64 Events Group, led by Neston Community Youth Centre.
On the hottest day of the year so far, families brought their picnics, some also brought tents, chairs and tables. Many sought the shade of Green Flag-winning park's beautiful trees. All enjoyed the entertainment laid on by Hip & Harmony CIC's 64 N'Ukes, Street Dancers and Community Choir, along with Little Actors Theatre Company and InterACT Youth Theatre.

Cheshire Police were also there, as were Farm Urban, Healthbox CIC, the RSPB and Chester Zoo. NCYC volunteers offered face painting and helped children to create 'bug hotels.' Given the sunny day, the vintage ice cream van was kept very busy!
Little Actors' Samantha Giblin said: "Our Little Actors did us proud with their musical theatre routines from Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, followed by excerpts from InterACT Youth Theatre's award-winning 'The Snow Dragons'. Great fun was had by all doing drama games in the NC&YC shelter - a great place to get some shade on a gorgeous day!"

Speaking at the event, NCYC Manager Gareth Prytherch said: "A huge thank you to all our volunteers who always work so hard, but particularly in this heat.
"Also our thanks to Chester Zoo, Farm Urban, RSPB Burton Mere, Hip & Harmony CIC and Little Actors who all volunteered their support and for Justin Madders MP for taking time out for us too.
"It's great to see so many people coming together to enjoy a peaceful, inclusive event."
