CH64 Low Carbon Initiative - Transition

We are at the end of our short series of case studies, an insight into what types of community-led projects are happening in the UK around food and transport.
Transition
There are literally thousands of these projects, all striving to do their bit for the environment and to engage communities to work together.
A fine example of this started in a small village called Totnes, Devon and has now grown to 50 countries. Rather than it be about one thing, the Transition Network is a movement of communities coming together to reimagine and rebuild our world, mainly centered around low carbon and energy efficiency projects.
Transition is a movement that has been growing since 2005. It is about communities stepping up to address the big challenges they face by starting local. By coming together, they are able to crowd-source solutions. They seek to nurture a caring culture, one focused on supporting each other, both as groups or as wider communities.
Transition has spread locally too, in Frodsham, Chester, Northwich, West Kirkby, Liverpool, St Helens...all have signed up and committed in their own way to making change through a Transition Town. For example in Chester they have committed to becoming a greener city. The aims of their 5 projects all lean towards food and energy - to help to reduce the community's carbon footprint and secure a more sustainable future source of electricity.
The first project identified by Chester Community Energy Ltd was to install a 50 KWp solar PV system on the roof of Northgate Arena. The project raised £60,000 via a community share issue and signed a power purchase agreement earlier this year.
Get involved
CH64 Low Carbon initiative is considering joining the Transition network, working with local groups that have set up to learn from their experiences and build on their successes. To begin with, we'd like a chance to talk to anyone who is interested in what they've seen so far, or what's important to them. How do you want to impact the CH64 community?
We've given you some ideas of what's happening, or possible - you can look up and research more, or join our Facebook group where we will post more exciting ideas. Start to post your own ideas, or concerns, then come and visit us face to face - we will be setting up an open day event once we know we have enough interest.. Request to join our facebook group here.
We've got a small active group of people so far, made up of residents of CH64. The next step is to build our community and start to understand how we can work together to achieve what you want.
If you aren't on Facebook, please text your name and email address to 07542 072857 so you can be kept informed that way. If you don't have access to email, please leave a phone number and we will be in touch.
