YMCA Wirral - Giving Back Life

As many of us look forward to Christmas time, many thousands of people are sleeping rough on the streets of England as well as many thousands who remain unseen.
In 2019 YMCA Wirral celebrates its 145th anniversary as a key local community organisation but it will do so against a sad backdrop of mounting social pressures and, for some, these pressures seem insurmountable.
As a local organisation, we are proud of our Christian heritage and ethos. We are an inclusive Christian movement transforming communities. Here in Wirral, like many other places around England and Wales, our YMCA provides a wide array of community-based activities and services to help meet local needs.
At YMCA Wirral we start with helping homeless people find a place of safety to stay and live, a place where they can thrive, plan support for their individual mental and physical health needs and support them on a path to sustainable independence and meaningful job opportunities.
YMCA is the largest and the oldest charity working with people in the world. Across England and Wales there are 94 YMCAs. Each one is a thriving and active community, a community that is transforming lives. Together, we provide over 9,000 beds for people every night.
There are many reasons why people become homeless - welfare changes, soaring housing costs, and a shortage of affordable accommodation all mean that more and more people are left with nowhere to call home, with official figures showing that rough sleeping has more than doubled in London since 2010.
When a person becomes homeless they are often profoundly lonely, isolated and vulnerable. Without support they can easily become trapped in a life of poverty, exclusion, or worse. YMCA Wirral aims to help them to turn their life around. Supporting a local YMCA means you enable us to make a massive difference to people in need, giving them freedom from danger and hunger and a safe place to call home; an end to isolation by being welcomed in the family at YMCA; counselling and support in a trusting environment; skills and training to get into education, work and to lead to an independent life.
YMCAs offer far more than just a bed for the night, we help people change their lives and face the future with confidence. It is an approach that sets YMCA apart.
