Serious Accident on Chester High Road Due to High Winds

Published: 26th May 2020 08:22

A falling branch, brought down by the gale force winds hitting the area today is believed to have caused a serious accident on the A540 in Neston, between Hinderton Road and Raby Park Road.

Accident on A540 caused by gale force windsPhoto by Phil Lloyd, who explains that the wind was so strong he could not keep the phone steady, hence the blurriness.

The branch smashed through the windscreen of a car, striking the driver and knocking her unconscious. This led to her car swerving across the carriageway and crashing into a car coming in the opposite direction, at around 2.45pm on Friday 22nd May. The driver remained unconscious for around half an hour and had to be extricated from her vehicle by emergency services.

The driver suffered severe facial injuries which were subsequently treated at Aintree Hospital. She is now recovering at home. Her baby, in the car with her at the time, was also checked for any injury but escaped unscathed.

It is understood that a family, including two young girls, were able to leave the second vehicle unassisted, but the children have suffered minor injuries.

In addition, a fallen tree has completely blocked the School Lane track between Quarry Road and Upper Raby Road in Neston. The wind is extremely strong at this highest point of Neston and more damage and disruption can be expected.

Another tree came down on the corner of Windermere Close and Talbot Road, but has now been removed by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

I think the chap helping to keep Harriet calm and giving her comfort was an off-duty Police Officer. I also believe that an off-duty Paramedic was in attendance. Good we have such people.
