Councillor Blog - Louise Gittins - March 2014

Author: Cllr Louise Gittins Published: 6th March 2014 13:03

Last summer I worked with one of the Streetscene officers on a little experiment with wildflowers.

After complaints about a scruffy bit of land on The Green in Little Neston, I talked to local residents and we agreed to try out a wildflower bed. Despite the seeds going in late we had a lovely initial show and this year it should be just perfect.

Wildflowers on The Green at Little Neston

One of the local residents helped with some weeding and shaking the flower heads for seeds. I have to admit that each time I walked past in the growing phase, I pulled out a weed or two myself.

Only downside is that it doesn't look as pretty in the Winter, but as it develops we should see some nice seed heads remaining during the colder months.

This year the experiment is being rolled out across the borough, local schools are going to be involved and carry out insect studies.

I'd like to roll it out across Little Neston and Burton ward too so I'm going to be paying, out of my Members budget, for similar areas across the ward. So the big question is - Where should we plant these seeds? Please let me know if you have a little spot that needs cheering up. The seeds will be going in I guess, in April, so let me know your ideas, by the end of the month. This should create a fantastic show for this special 200th year of Neston Ladies (Club) Day and the World War 1 Centenary.

Leave your ideas below, or contact me by email.

Hi Louise I think the area by the bus stop in Ness would look great with some wild flowers

This is a great idea Louise. I would love to see more wild flowers about, they really cheer up the place. A place that I can think of that would benefit, is the patch of land at the top of Orchard Drive off Marshlands Road (beind the miners cottages). This would certainly be improved by some wild flowers.

I live just next to the green and the flowers did very well last year. The winter is not so good but then we will have a good show this summer. It is just a pity that we are now having to put up with delivery lorries going over one corner and doing the grass no good at all!
