Councillor Blog - Louise Gittins - October 2014

In her latest blog, Cllr Louise Gittins addresses double yellow lines and mozzies.
I've been working with our local primary schools and residents in Little Neston to try and improve safety outside schools at pick up and drop off times. This is a huge problem and impacts on both kids safety and people who live outside schools.
At long last we've got a crossing outside Burton Road Primary (even if it did take over a year). Well done to Neston Mums on a Mission for their perseverance. I've been monitoring the problem outside St Winnie's and Woodfall with PCSOs and council staff and can only describe the scenes as chaotic and at times dangerous.
I've spoken to parents who have been in tears, worried about their kids walking to school and angry residents who are blocked in and can't get to work.
I've helped children cross the road and asked parents to move cars from zig zags and driveways, asked others to stop blocking pavements and parking opposite junctions. Along with many other people, I feel overwhelmed with the problem.
At Woodfall we've worked closely with the school and residents and now have some new double yellow lines on dangerous corners and some new bollards too. At St Winnie's the problem is worse as it's a busy through-road and, believe it or not, there are about ten buses between 815am and 915am and quite often the traffic becomes gridlocked.
So what can we do? I'd love to see more kids walking or cycling to school but until it's safe I think parents are reluctant to let this happen. I'd also like 20 mph zones not just outside schools but in surrounding built up areas and for people to be mindful of their fellow residents and neighbours. One primary school in the borough is piloting a Parents' Charter which, if successful, is maybe something we could look at for all our schools. In the meantime all suggestions are welcome.
Mozzies!!!!
They are certainly making peoples' lives a misery and I've seen lots of bites when I've been out and about.
Children particularly are being affected. I don't know what the answer is but I really think CWaC should be taking a strategic view of this and be looking to other parts of the country, and indeed internationally, for good practice and coming up with a range of measures. I noticed there is an e-petition on the CWaC website which people may want to sign, and some residents are taking out a paper version over the next week.
