Plus Dane Want to Demolish My Garage Says Neston Resident

Author: John Marnell Published: 25th March 2015 12:26

Local resident John Marnell has written to AboutMyArea Neston regarding a notice he has received from Plus Dane Group.

I have been evicted from my garage in Neston. Plus Dane have decided to demolish the six garages in Hawkins Road due to them being unsafe. I find this hard to believe.

The garages in Hawkins Road, NestonThe garages in Hawkins Road, Neston, that have been earmarked for demolition, with 'no internal inspection.'

I have contacted Joanne Wynne from Plus Dane but she was unable to answer any of my questions. I asked what would be the cost of repair as opposed to demolition. She said the structural report only stated the garages in their present condition were unsafe. All six garages are let and there has been no internal inspection.

The end garage, which is the one I rent, has a side wall that can be inspected from the outside. It is in the same condition it was in when I first rented it 5 years ago. It has been repaired before. The other five garages have no sign of damage. Some of them have been let for over 30 years.

Obviously we are all disappointed we will lose our garages and that we were not offered another garage in the Neston area. There has been no consultation and the offer of a garage 9 miles away in Ellesmere Port gives you a good idea of how Plus Dane view us.

I have contacted Councillor Andy Williams. He also can not understand why they have taken this decision because the demolition would give open access to the gardens of a number of houses. A wall will have to be built.

Will all the council owned garages in Neston be demolished? I think the policy at the moment is to allow them to become empty and spend no money on repairs. I could be wrong.

I have now parked my car on the road outside my house. As a result the cars on the other side of the road are having to park on the pavement.

It's not just his garage their knocking down, it's all of them. They are making a car park for the residents as some of them on the estate didn't have a garage, we had to gut our garage in Monday then handed keys into council

Just a quick update...John has finally received a clear explanation for the demolition. He writes: "Thanks to Andy Williams I have been given a copy of the structural report for the block of six garages in Hawkins Road. They will be demolished due to severe spalling of the concrete columns. I have also been given the report for the other block of 22 garages in Hawkins Road. They are in a much worse state and it is also recommended they be demolished.
I would say all the garages in Little Neston and Neston will be demolished as they are all of the same age. Shame to lose the garages. I feel sorry for the people whereby there property backs onto one of these garages."

I lived in Hawkins Road in the 50/60s when very few working class people had cars. In one way, if car ownership is a gauge for improved living standards for working people, this is a good thing but the Raby Road estate was not built with future car ownership in mind, it is a nightmare trying to drive around there because people have no option but to park on the roads. Some of the green areas should be sacrificed to accomodate the cars to get them off the street and make the roads safer.
