Gypsy Site in Neston Threatens New Local Jobs

Published: 7th September 2011 10:00
Breaking News...

Further to the furore that is currently raging in Neston over the proposal for a residential Gypsy and Traveller site, it has now been revealed that there could be a direct threat to local jobs.

Proposed location of Gypsy & Traveller site at Clayhill, NestonClayhill, Neston. Proposed site marked in red. Click to download
full size pdf of the map.

A business has recently purchased a parcel of land from Cheshire West and Chester Council, right opposite the proposed site, and had, until recently, been in negotation with the Council to purchase the land currently earmarked by CW&C as being a possible Travellers site.

It is understood that the company concerned wishes to build a new unit on the site that could provide a number of new jobs. Some estimates indicate upwards of 60 positions could be at stake.  Andy Williams, CW&C Ward Councillor for Neston will include this information in his statement to the Executive at tonight's meeting (see below for more information).

News of a threat to jobs will no doubt further incense local residents in the Neston area who have been making it clear over the past few days that the proposed site would be unwelcome for a number of reasons.  Some have also pointed out that the very criteria on which Ekosgen (the consultants brought in by CW&C to draw up a shortlist of sites in the borough) have based their proposal of the Clayhill site, are not being met.  These include proximity to schools, shops and employment.

A survey on AboutMyArea/CH64 has garnered over 80 votes, 77 against the proposed site at Clayhill. Volunteers have also been out with petitions, going door to door to collect signatures, and further copies have been lodged at local pubs, shops and offices.

The issue will go to the vote at an Executive meeting of Cheshire West and Chester Council at their HQ this evening.  The meeting, commencing at 5.30pm, will be held in public and broadcast live via their website.

Well that takes the biscuit, doesn't it? Surely that's got to see off this ridiculous proposal. We need more jobs in Neston, not less. If the Council pushes ahead despite this information, I predict serious trouble ahead. People just will not stand for it.

If this traveller camp goes ahead now it will be a scandal & nothing less. There are so so many people apposed to this in Neston so CWAC had better tread really carefully here unless they want an enquiry on their doorstep.

If the proceed with this ridiculous idea and we do loose 60 new jobs then I am sure the national media, local tv, papers and everyone who will listen will hear about this story and any councillor who supported it. Lets face it with the recent media coverage of travellers this sort of story would be quite big news now jobs are at risk.

Trust me CWAC and their councillors need to tread very carefully ... hundreds if not thousands of people in Neston are not angry - they are furious and will challenge and publicise this at every possible level to make sure the traveller camp does not go ahead

Lets hope CWAC see sense today in the meeting and remove Neston as a potential site, and the business who wants the land gets it so that site can never become an option again in the future !

Another arguement against this site as a travellers camp - There have been many complaints raised by residents on Liverpool road and the Ringway about noise from the Aldi distribution site as it operates 24x7. These houses are some distance from the site whereas this plot of land proposed for the travellers site is immediately behind the Aldi centre and next to the tip.

Considering the needs of the travellers, this site is therefore 24x7 industrial (due to Aldi) and totally unsuitable as a site to live on. If people in brick houses hundreds of yards away are woken by noise from the site then someone trying to sleep in a caravan or other mobile home right next to Aldi would have their health seriously affected !

I think The Travellers have to live somewhere and this site is as good as any, due to recent racial harrasment i have received i think its the same old story that outsiders are not welcome in neston.
