Neston's Leahurst to Feature in Animal Clinic TV Programme

Neston will be in the limelight from this week as the veterinary school at Leahurst is featured on Channel 5's Animal Clinic, hosted by Ben Fogle.
The programme will once again give an insight into the work carried out at the three animal hospitals that make up the Leahurst campus. It follows the earlier series, hosted by Rolf Harris, which was also centered on the Neston site.
Ben's love of animals was first inspired by the work of his father, Bruce Fogle, the celebrated author and veterinary surgeon with over forty years' experience in the field.
The series will follow the university's vets as they deal with a variety of medical emergencies, everyday injuries and mystery ailments, involving everything from pets and farm animals to thoroughbred racehorses.
The specialist vets working at Leahurst are said to be among the best in the country. Each year, nearly 30,000 animals receive treatment or care and the students taught there are the veterinary surgeons of the future.
The campus includes two working farms, which provide superb teaching opportunities while the Equine Hospital, which opened in 1991, sees more than 2,000 referral patients a year, 20% of which are emergency cases.
The Small Animals Teaching Hospital is the newest addition at the site. It sees over 6,000 patients a year.
The series will allow viewers to see one-to-one intricate cases such as a horse being treated for potentially fatal colic, a beloved bearded collie with a tumour-like mass on her heart and watch the specialst farm vets carry out emergency midwife duty for ewes during the lambing season.
Chester Zoo will also feature, when the vets' specialist skills will be put to use treating some of the world's most exotic species.
"The work the vets and students do at Leahurst is nothing short of amazing," said Ben.
"The wonderful thing about Leahurst is that I can see the quality of education and training the next generation of vets is getting here."
Animal Clinic's commissioning editor Ian Dunkley said: "We are delighted to have Ben on board. His background and love of animals make him the natural choice to present the second series."
The eight-episode show starts on Wednesday October 30 at 8pm on Channel 5.
