Cheshire West and Chester Council has approved changes to the traffic calming measures in Lees Lane. The background to this decision is as follows.
Welsh water held a meeting in July at Neston Community Youth Centre, to explain their major works in Little Neston. They are installing a new surface water sewer in Lees Lane as far as Ashtree Drive. This involves digging up the chicane by Rock Lee Gardens. We asked if it could not be replaced and were told they would need an instruction from CWAC.

Subsequently there was a meeting of councillors, officers and residents on site. The councillors and council officers made two points very clearly:
- The council has no money for any changes to the road layout in Lees Lane;
- Some of the chicanes must remain to support the 20mph speed limit.
The meeting was reminded of the results of a recent survey of residents of Lees Lane, where 93% of those who responded considered the traffic island layout to be ineffective and unsafe and 89% would like to see the islands removed and replaced with alternative measures.
It was agreed that the council would ask Welsh Water not to replace the chicane near Rock Lee Gardens and to ask Welsh Water if they would remove the one by Stonebank Drive while they had contractors on site. Welsh Water has agreed to remove this chicane as a gesture of goodwill to the community.
We have campaigned for all the chicanes to be removed and we will continue to do this when the opportunity arises. We would support a different traffic calming system but recognise the council has no money to make any changes.
We wish to thank the council officers and councillors who attended the site meeting for their help, and in particular to councillor Louise Gittins for organising the meeting.
