Crime Prevention Funding Available for Cheshire Communities

Published: 13th June 2019 11:03

Cheshire's police and crime commissioner has today (Thursday 13 June) opened the latest round of his Safer Communities Fund making £100,000 available to community organisations who want to tackle issues in their area.

Over the last three years, David Keane's Safer Communities Fund has supported hundreds of small community groups across Cheshire to run projects or initiatives to make their communities safer.

The fund empowers local people to make a real difference by preventing crime or anti-social behaviour and this year, PCC David Keane wants to award more of the grants to grassroots community groups.

Each individual project is entitled to bid for up to £5,000 but this year, the commissioner wants to see more groups benefitting from their share of the £100K funding and is encouraging more applications for between £2,000 and £3,000 which are supported by match funding.

David Keane said: "Since launching the Safer Communities Fund three years ago, it has been fantastic to see so many community projects develop and to witness the significant impact this funding has on making our communities a safer place to live.

"The high number of applications we receive each year is testament to the level of passion and commitment from local people in Cheshire who want to make a real difference in their communities.

"I want to hear from small organisations, charities, community and voluntary groups across the county and my expectation is that in developing bids organisations will work with their local PCSOs and officers to ensure projects tackle crime prevention or community safety issues in their area.

"I'd also like to see a commitment and a long term plan to sustaining these activities or creating a legacy."

Projects which have recently benefited from the fund include Live Your Life, Drop the Knife who are using the funding to reduce the amount of knives on the streets of Halton and an event to make senior road users safer on Cheshire's roads.

Applications will be considered from Cheshire based groups whose work is supporting crime prevention or reduction or meets one of the objectives in the commissioner's police and crime plan.

This could include, but is not limited to, projects that support victims, protect vulnerable people, tackle anti-social behaviour or drug issues, improve road safety or promote a safe night time economy.

There is no set deadline for applications.

If our PCC had not wasted our money in prosecuting the Chief Constable by not making a single one of the 74 charges stick, there would now be £450,000 available for the Safer Communities Fund.I hope Mr.John Dwyer returns next May or even scrap the Dept.of PCC and return to allowing the chairman of the Police Committee to do that which is necessary.
