Play Your Part in Borough Transformation

Published: 14th October 2019 11:05

Cheshire West and Chester Council is urging residents to get involved as it sets out an ambitious vision for the future of the borough despite financial uncertainty.

The Council launched Play Your Part on 10 October to give residents, businesses, young people and community groups chance to have their say on its next four-year plan and how they can help make the plan a reality.

Play Your Part focuses on five challenges the borough faces between 2020 and 2024 - all in the light of a budget gap of between £11million and £27million over this time, depending on future government funding.

Cllr Louise Gittins - Play Your PartCllr Louise Gittins speaking in a video on the Play Your Part webpage, from Neston's Sytchcroft Park.

These challenges include tackling the climate emergency, supporting our economy to grow and provide good jobs with fair wages for our residents, supporting children and young people to get the best start in life and achieve their full potential, helping more of us to live longer, happier, healthier lives and making all our neighbourhoods even better places to call home.

Play Your Part also sets out its ambition for a new partnership between the Council and community in which everyone has a part to play in tackling the challenges ahead.

Cllr Louise Gittins, Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: "My overarching priority as Council Leader is to help everyone thrive by building stronger communities.

"I want to work together with residents, community groups, businesses and other organisations so that we all play our part in making our communities greener, fairer and more involved.

"We don't think we have all the answers, and know we can't fix all the problems alone - it is only by building stronger communities that we can tackle the challenges we face as a borough.

"Of course, we are working under extreme financial uncertainty - while the government has indicated that there will be extra funding for councils, this is for one year only and there are no guarantees between 2021 and 2024.

"We pride ourselves on our long-term approach to planning, which is difficult in the light of current national and international circumstances. Nevertheless, we have set out some strong ideas for the next four years and would like you to tell us if you agree and how you can play your part."

Amongst a number of ambitions, the Council currently aims to provide extra investment in ongoing services for vulnerable children and adults, with plans to spend £114.2 million on services to support health, wellbeing and independence and £65 million on services for children and families by 2024.

The Council is also looking to invest £66.4 million on building 1,000 homes and maintaining existing Council homes and looking to spend £22.7 million on heritage and culture.

Play Your Part is an eight-week engagement from 10 October until 5 December. If a General Election is called within this time, pre-election publicity rules may impact on how the Council can engage.

There are a number of ways people can take part, from filling in surveys and voting in quick polls to posting thoughts on an online ideas board. Residents can choose to engage with the challenges that interest them most or with the full survey.

Money is targeted where it is needed most.

There is less money spent in "parkgate, ness, Wileston and surrounding areas" because they are, by comparison, leafy, affluent, low crime and low stress places to live.

Subscribe to the Police and crime weekly bulletin if you don't believe me. We are in relative utopia on the West side of the Wirral.

Every High Street is decimated across the UK bar a handful of your Ludlow type foody towns. That is because shopping habits have changed and they wont turn back the clock. Many people of my peer group go to the shops once a year at Christmas (not taking into account food shopping). Everything else is purchased on-line. Neston is not doing too bad in comparison to many.

Take my money and spend it where it is needed. With my blessing.

Thank you for your reply but we have signed up for the police report for a few years now. You need to open your eyes and look what's around you you don't have a clue speaking to the local community they are fed up just as much as we are. Crime in Neston has escalated what with drug use and other crime there may not be much crime in your area but go and look round Neston. Give us descent shops and people will shop here not everyone wants to shop on line people like to see properly what they buy

Undefined - your grasp of economics is poor. It is not the council's job to open shops, thats down to businesses. The reason many don't is because they don't thrive, particularly independent grocery and clothes shops, in most high streets. Businesses cannot run shops on thin air. You may prefer to shop in the town centre, but because so few do, there is an obvious switch now to high streets being full of things you can't get online such as hairdressers, barbers, tattoo parlours and coffee shops.

There's lots of things I don't like about the modern world, but blaming it on the council is ridiculous.

Look how good our parks are, also our streets are by and large kept pretty clean and bins emptied. It's not perfect, but it's not the worst and I agree with CO above - our council tax needs to go where its needed most and that is probably social care and education these days.
