Neston Town Council and Neston Civic Society jointly entered Neston & Little Neston in the 2019 Best Kept Village Competition, sponsored by Cheshire West and Chester Council.
Accepting the award from Mark Mitchell DL, the High Sheriff of Cheshire, were (l-r): Cllr Janet Griffiths (Neston Town Council and Neston Civic Society); Rob Ward (Neston Civic Society) and Cllr Pat Kynaston (Neston Town Council).
Neston was awarded Most Improved Village, with the judges citing the town's hanging baskets and 'wonderful variety of floral displays - very impressive.' They also commented favourably on the Railway Station and the area around the High School for their well maintained flower troughs, well placed bins and the lack of graffiti, dog fouling and weeds.
Also noted were the excellent facilities in Stanney Fields Park, up to date notice boards and history boards.
The judges' (abbreviated) notes stated:
"Neston is a very pleasant town with a good variety of shops and free parking which makes it a great place to stop and visit. Together with excellent access for walkers and cyclists and views of the Dee Estuary and Welsh Hills, it can be enjoyed by all. The Town and Village caters for both young and old alike, with plenty of amenities and a good selection of places to eat, socialise and relax. A very special place to live and visit, a joy to judge"
Neston's impressive floral displays, such as the hanging baskets planted and maintained by PDQ Landscape Maintenance, helped clinch the award for the town.
Peter Quayle of PDQ Landscape Maintenance, who are contracted to plant and maintain the hanging baskets and various other planted displays around the Neston area, said:"We are absolutely thrilled to hear about this award. We've been looking after the floral displays for about a year now and we are delighted to have played a part in catching the eyes of the judges.
"This isn't just work for us, we take great pride in ensuring that the place we live in looks its very best."
More awards came our way at the ceremony on Monday November 4, including Neston coming second in the Best Kept Village with a population of between 5,000 and 10,000 category; a Little Gem for the Commemorative Bench in Little Neston and Parkgate receiving a Little Gem for the Hi-C boat on the middle slip.
A spokesperson for Neston Town Council said: "Thank you to all who care and look after your neighbourhood, we couldn't have done it without you."

Thanks too to the many other people who look after our green spaces and pick up litter.
It's good to know that independent judges think that the Neston area is special!
