Weymouth SEA LIFE’s penguins take on World Cup challenge

Author: Online Stories Published: 15th June 2018 16:50

Due to the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Weymouth SEA LIFE's newest residents, a colony of twenty fairy penguins, have taken on their neighbour rivals, the Humboldt penguins, in their own football tournament.
Weymouth SEA LIFE is home to two colonies of penguins whose native countries are competing in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. To kick off the tournament Weymouth's fairy penguins and Humboldt penguins have been getting their flippers in shape ready for a game between themselves.

To get into the World Cup spirit and show support for their home teams, Australia and Peru, Weymouth Curators have coached the penguins to prepare them for their own game, ahead of their native teams' first matches on Saturday June 16 in Russia.
Despite all the training, during the match the penguins' own characteristics came into play and confirmed their different strengths and weaknesses. Fairy penguins are the world's smallest penguin measuring just over 25cm tall meaning they were very nimble on their feet during the match and were able to run circles around the much larger Humboldts. However, the Humboldts weren't at a disadvantage as they have excellent eyesight and are notorious for their quick swimming speed which can reach up to 30 miles per hour, but all didn't go to plan.

James coach of the Humboldt penguins explains: "I was quietly confident in my team due to their fast swim speed but it all went pear-shaped when the penguins were distracted by their fish supper and lost interest in the match. The Humboldts didn't even make it to half time before they threw the towel in and decided football wasn't the chosen career path for them, leaving the match wide open for the fairy penguins. Ahead of the next game we definitely need to get some transfers in and work on their attention span."
Tyler coach of the fairy penguins added: "What a result it was for our fairy penguins, they may be the new kids on the block at Weymouth SEA LIFE but they have proven that they have the skills and determination to out play the Humboldts. As Europe's only colony of fairy penguins, they have the potential to go far and perhaps Australia's top player, Tim Cahil, should be worried about his position being taken by one of our little penguins."
Weymouth SEA LIFE is the home to more than 1,000 creatures with 13 different zones containing Europe's only colony of fairy penguins which are the world's smallest penguin. Visitors also have the opportunity to meet sharks, turtles and stingrays.

Guests are invited to learn all about these creatures which live in and around the sea and how we can work together to protect them from harm. Caribbean Cove is Dorset's largest outdoor adventure playground and can offer hours of entertainment along with the park's Splash Zone. Daily talks and feeding demonstrations are also held at the park to further educate guests about the different species which are present at Weymouth.
