Milton Jones: On The Road Comes To The Kings Theatre, Southsea

Author: annahowelll Published: 20th September 2013 13:50

Despite already performing to over 70,000 fans so far on his smash-hit sell-out spring tour and a packed out house at London's Hammersmith Apollo, Milton Jones has not tired of being On the Road... just yet.

With a new series of Mock the Week due to air this summer, a two week run at Edinburgh Festival's Assembly Hall 2nd-14th August, an autumn tour beginning 3rd October and a November DVD release of the same show, Milton is on a phenomenal, unstoppable roll. Snowballing his way through another 34 towns in the UK, On the Road is well on the way to being his most successful show to date.

Amongst his new dates, Milton will be performing in several towns and cities for the second and even third time this year including The Kings Theatre Southsea on Saturday 5th October - and AboutMyArea Portsmouth were lucky enough to speak to him about it.

What have been your tour highlights so far?

"Basically one of the good things is that it has been selling very well.  What's good with the sort of thing I do is that I tend to get whole families coming along, I get such a mixed audience wherever I have been, and in places that I haven't been before as well.  And when I do go back to places that I have been before, the audiences have been bigger than they were last time.

"One of the best things, besides how many people come, is how many kids turn up.  I think that is probably to do with Mock The Week being the naughty show that children stay up for, so they come along.  But then because I have done a lot of work for Radio 4 so I get a lot of older people coming along as well - it is a real mish-mash of people.

"As for specific tour highlights - we almost got stuck in snow in Halifax, though it seems like a long time ago now.  Edinburgh was good; it was a lot of fun.  Mainly because it didn't rain - it always rains when I am in Edinburgh.  But I was there for two weeks and the show was nice, the venue was nice and the weather was nice so my family came up.

"Apart from all that I am just looking forward to get back on it and finishing it now - I have just finished filming the DVD and that was good.  I walked out and the first two rows were filled with people wearing Hawaiian shirts which I wasn't expecting, I like that it is becoming a bit like that where people dress up."

Have you been to Portsmouth before, and if so what are you looking forward to coming back?

"I was at Portsmouth Guildhall earlier in the tour, around March time, but I am looking forward to coming to The Kings Theatre, and Southsea - I have never been before.  I have done Portsmouth Jongleurs over the years, but never the Kings - it is an entirely different kettle of fish really.

"I always like going places where the audience are interactive, the worst thing is indifference.  I don't even mind if it is just someone shouting "shut up" or "get off" - in London they all just fold their arms because they have got so much entertainment they pretend they are watching television.  But I have noticed in places like Portsmouth people are going out for a night out regardless, and they are going to have a good time so I have always really enjoyed the Portsmouth crowd - they are always so up for it!"

What was it that made you get into comedy, who were your inspirations?

"Well I wasn't really inspired by comedians, I was more inspired by people in sitcoms, people like Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder or Ronnie Barker in the Two Ronnies.  I wanted to be an actor originally - being a comedian never even entered my head.  But because I wasn't working I tried to do stand up and gradually that took over because at the same time it was becoming more popular as an art form, but also I was more in control of it - you don't have to rehearse with anyone, you write your own stuff, you don't have to be in a play you don't enjoy or share the money.  If you are prepared to get started and take all the flack to begin with it becomes gradually a better way of living. "

What are your plans for when the tour ends?

"I have got several things going on, I am in the middle of writing a sitcom script for the BBC and then I have a radio series for Radio 4 and then hopefully I go to Australia and New Zealand next year.  I am also filming another Live At The Apollo on Monday, which is due for release around November time - so that will keep me going along nicely for now."
