Public Lectures
Toward a Unified Framework for Intelligent Systems and Biomedical Robotics
A Professorial Inaugural lecture by Honghai Liu, Professor of Intelligent Systems, School of Creative Technologies,
University of Portsmouth
Date: Wednesday 23 October 2013
Time: 6.00-7.00pm, followed by a drinks reception
Venue: Portland Building, Portland Street, Portsmouth PO1 3AH
In this lecture, Professor Liu will present a novel research theory that he and his team have developed, an approximate reasoning based computational framework. The theory has been used on four applications and he will discuss two of these; the manipulation of prosthetic limbs and the analysis of human body motion through CCTV cameras. This theory overcomes both practical and theoretical research constraints and provides a solution to one of the problems in intelligent systems. Professor Liu has research interests in machine intelligence, multi-sensor fusion, fuzzy and qualitative reasoning, knowledge representation, motion planning, robotic systems and web-based systems. His research has been funded by a range of bodies including the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Do it the Safety Way! 100 Years of Accident PreventionA public lecture by Dr Mike Esbester,
Lecturer in History, University of Portsmouth
Date: Wednesday 6 November 2013
Time: 6.00-7.00pm, followed by a drinks reception
Venue: Portland Building, Portland Street, Portsmouth PO1 3AH
We all recognise the annual Christmas anti-drink/driving campaign - but do we ever stop to think when messages telling us how to be safe started, and why? Dr Esbester's lecture explores the phenomenon of safety education which aims to prevent accidents by using the media to persuade people to change their behaviour and act safely. He will show how and why safety education started 100 years ago, how it spread throughout British society, and how it has used surprisingly diverse and engaging techniques - from photographs, posters and films to cigarette cards, handkerchiefs and beer mats, examples of which will feature in the lecture. Overall, he will decode the messages hidden in safety education, examining what they say about Britain over the last 100 years.

Mega-events and mega-myths: 2012 and the search for Olympic legacy
A public lecture by John R. Gold, Professor of Urban Historical Geography, Department of Social Sciences, Oxford Brookes University
Date: Wednesday 13 November 2013
Time: 6.00-7.00pm, followed by a drinks reception
Venue: Portland Building, Portland Street, Portsmouth PO1 3AH
A concern for long-term positive outcomes is an essential part of the reason why cities seek to host large sports and cultural festivals, but what is the evidence that those outcomes are delivered? This lecture takes a historical view of the way that organisers have thought about the outcomes of the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, highlighting the changing importance over time of four different notions - memory, regeneration, sustainability and legacy. The main analysis will focus on the promises made for London 2012 and the search for a sustainable legacy, but the starting point will be about 120 years earlier.
This is a joint lecture with the Royal Geographical Society Southern Branch.
Admission is free but by ticket only from http://johngold.eventbrite.co.uk/
The Ramón Pérez de Ayala Biennial Lecture
The Borgias: Myth and Reality
A public lecture by Professor Enrique García Hernán, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Madrid

Time: 6.00-7.00pm, followed by a drinks reception
Venue: Park Building, King Henry I Street, Portsmouth PO1 2DZ
The Borgia family are one of the most infamous in European history, celebrated for their ruthlessness and cruelty (Cesare); their sexual wantonness (Lucrezia) and their corruption of the Church (Rodrigo, who became Pope Alexander VI). Professor Enrique García Hernán is the world's leading authority on the family and he will draw on his extensive publications to provide a measured assessment of the realities that lie behind the myths that have grown up around them.
The ‘Ramón Pérez de Ayala Biennial Lecture' is supported by the Cultural Office of the Spanish Embassy and honours the life and work of Ramón Pérez de Ayala (1881-1952), a distinguished novelist, poet and critic who was Ambassador to the Court of St James in the years 1931-6.

artSOUTH: An Audience with Willy Little by Mel Brimfield
Thursday 3 October 2013, The Square Tower, Old Portsmouth, 7.30pm
This is a live theatrical performance charting the history of fictional, avant-garde cruise-ship entertainment troupe The Navy Cut Players, produced in collaboration with Dickie Beau and Paul Higgs, commissioned by artSOUTH. Centered around the reminiscences of lead actor and comedian Willy Little (Dickie Beau), this unique collaboration celebrates and reanimates the rich tradition of music hall and Variety theatre in the Southampton region, and is a paean to its melancholy demise as a form in the face of developing TV and radio broadcast media. Found audio drawn from a multitude of vanished acts is the basis of the narrative, remembered by Beau's distinctive lip-synch technique, including Stanelli's Hornchestra, The Beverley Sisters, Wilson Keppel and Betty, and comedians emerging from the variety stage including Morecambe and Wise, Tony Hancock, Frankie Howerd, Kenneth Williams and Harry Secombe. Tickets £5, available from http://willylittleportsmouth.eventbrite.co.uk/
