Cabaret Nights Come to Tiger Tiger - A Review by Sarah Morcom

Author: sarahmorcom Published: 28th May 2011 12:12

As the lights dimmed, the evening's host, Laura London sashayed through the audience, flirtatiously welcoming everyone and climbed on stage to a big cheer.

Tiger Tiger at Gunwharf Quays is the last place you would expect to find a showcase of burlesque talent, but last night was the club's ‘I love Friday Nights' event which promises a ‘two course meal followed by a variety of entertainment.'

Warming the crowd up, Laura London grabbed an unsuspecting man onto the stage and made him her glamorous assistant while she started the show with a few magic tricks. Nothing heavyweight, but entertaining in the least.

The first act on was Vaudi Ruin, who themed her first dance around candy and gold glitter. Using a Lindt-esque rabbit head (fake, of course) and a giant lolly pop as props it's fair to say she opened the show with something a bit unexpected. I'll admit I've never been to a burlesque show before, but I thought there would be more ‘teasing' and suggesting, opposed to the nudity happening so quickly.

Next to follow was Coco Ole, whose act was focused on pole dancing. To say her moves up, down and around the pole were impressive is an understatement. While all I could think about was how strong she was in her arms and legs, the crowd loved her moves, especially the all-male table to the right of me.Coco Ole wowing crowds

Gwendoline Lamour, who has performed for Elton John in the past, was next on stage. She approached her act differently - and more what I expected. Dancing to 50s vintage style music, she moved around the stage effortlessly with two enormous, white fans of feathers, giving a more classic and demure.

Overall the show was good. The standard, in my opinion, was high and there was a good mix of themes. It did seem however, a little short, at around 35 - 40 minutes long and there was a couple of musical hitches.

The overall experience though is a different matter. Dinner was advertised to be served at 7pm and the show to start at 8pm. However, we didn't start eating until around 8.30pm, incidentally, the same time the show actually started. The choice of food was good - much more than I expected. (I had steak, which was delicious and my guest had Tortellini) But there was something awkward about having a mouthful of meat and then being urged by the host, to clap and cheer for the oncoming act. We then waited over an hour for the second course, by which time most people were leaving and their tables and chairs were being eagerly whisked away by the staff.

The problems would have to be ironed out before I would recommend these nights. But if they were, it would be a perfect girls out - especially with ‘international sensation' The Dreamboys entertaining diners next week.

Tickets cost £20 per person and are available from Tiger Tiger on 023 92882244 or www.tigertiger.co.uk/cabaret
