On Thursday 22 January 2015 at 7.45pm, well-known local historian and author Michael Forrest will present a talk entitled Gallipoli 1915: Battleships, Beaches and Bravery at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre.

Michael Forrest is the author of a key account of the Gallipoli campaign: The Defence of the Dardanelles - From Bombards to Battleships. Michael is a life-long ‘battlefield enthusiast' and has walked many of the world's most famous scenes of conflict in South Africa, Europe and the USA.

In the course of his research, Michael has so far made two visits to the Gallipoli battlefields, and is currently writing a book on the Turkish fortifications of the Dardanelles. He is an active member of the Palmerston Forts Society, based at Fort Nelson in Hampshire, and performs as a volunteer artilleryman at the Fort.

Michael's talk describes in detail the naval attack and subsequent amphibious landing. The Gallipoli Campaign was intended to secure the Gallipoli Peninsula on the northern bank of the Dardanelles, but instead it became one of the most disastrous campaigns waged by the Allies, resulting in half a million casualties.
