Portsmouth Cathedral Hosts Celebrated Artist

Published: 18th May 2015 17:24

Portsmouth Cathedral will host a special evening talk with celebrated artist Annie Cattrell.  Organised by the Friends of Portsmouth Cathedral, Annie will give a presentation on Tuesday 26th May at 7pm.  Annie will discuss previous works and the thought behind ‘Brink', her inspired art piece installed in the Cathedral's Chapel of Healing and Reconciliation, which was funded by the Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service Association.

Annie was born in Glasgow and studied Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art and University of Ulster, and Ceramics & Glass at the Royal College of Art. She has lectured in many art colleges, is senior research fellow in Sculpture at De Montfort University, Leicester, external examiner in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle, and has been a tutor at the Royal College of Art since 2000.

Her practice as an artist is at times informed by working with specialists in neuroscience, meteorology, engineering, psychiatry and the history of science. This cross-disciplinary approach has enabled her to learn in depth about these fields and exposed her to cutting-edge research. She is particularly interested in the synthesis of art, science and the poetic. She has exhibited her work widely, both nationally and internationally, and her work is in many public and private collections.

The Cathedral's Chapel of Healing and Reconciliation recently underwent restoration following repairs funded by the First World War Centenary Cathedrals Repair Fund.  Portsmouth Cathedral is one of 31 cathedrals in the country to receive funding from the last round of grants.  The £86,000 was used for repairs to the exterior eastern wall of the Chancel, and the Chapel of Healing and Reconciliation was out of use whilst work to remove the existing plaster and repoint the interior south wall was underway.  The work recently completed, Annie Cattrell's ‘Brink' will be restored to its rightful location in the Chapel in time for her evening talk.

Dean of Portsmouth, the Very Revd David Brindley, said "We are very pleased to welcome Annie to the Cathedral again and learn more about her work.  The Chapel of Healing and Reconciliation in the Cathedral, now restored, is again a place of prayer and reflection and Annie's work ‘Brink' enhances this experience."

Tickets for the event on Tuesday 26th of May at 7pm are £7.00 (£5.00 for Friends of Portsmouth Cathedral) from the Cathedral Shop or call 02392823300. Drinks and light refreshments from 6.30pm.
