National Dementia Week Lifts the Lid on Early Warning Signs For Dementia

Author: annahowelll Published: 21st May 2012 15:45

With 1 in 3 people over 65 going on to develop dementia in the UK, and figures set to double over the next 40 years, this year's National Dementia Week (21 - 25 May 2012) aims to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms which can aid diagnosis.

Dr Zoë Hemsley of Queen Alexandra (QA) hospital comments: "Dementia can be difficult to identify as it affects everyone in different ways, but there are some key symptoms which provide a good indication that someone may be developing dementia."

So exactly what signs should you look out for if you suspect that a loved one may be developing dementia? Working in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Society, Dr Hemsley of QA hospital details below some common early warning signs:

  1. Memory loss - struggling to remember recent events, but easily recalling things from the past, forgetting the names of friends and everyday objects, getting confused even when in a familiar environment.
  2. Mood changes - feeling anxious, depressed or angry.
  3. Problems with communication and reasoning - repeating yourself or losing the thread of what you are saying, finding it hard to follow conversations or programmes on TV. Not being able to look after your finances, or organise your day to day activities anymore.

Dr Hemsley continues: "If you suspect dementia, your first port of call should always be your GP, who will be best placed to refer you to a specialist. If problems are identified whilst you are an in patient at QA Hospital we may also refer you on to our local mental health teams.

"Identifying and diagnosing dementia in the early stages can be quite a challenge; raising awareness of the symptoms could mean you are able to help someone close to you, who may be struggling with the effects of the symptoms.

"There is actually a lot we can do to help, including drug treatment for some people, and the presence of mental health support teams for those with a dementia diagnosis. Every year we understand more about dementia, and develop new strategies that can help to boost someone's confidence and maintain their independence for as long as possible."

For anyone interested in finding out more about dementia and its impact, there will be an information stand (run in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Society) in the atrium at QA hospital on 22 May 2012. The Alzheimer's Society website at www.alzheimers.org.uk also provides an excellent source of information.
