Cursed City Dark Tide

A brand new method of storytelling is being launched on Friday 11th October on facebook, instagram and on the streets of Portsmouth - and you are invited to join in and receive free gifts along the way.

Cursed City: Dark Tide is a collaboration of Portsmouth writers who have created a series of clues and puzzles for you to work out. Meanwhile, the bigger picture tells a story of strange and life-threatening events happening in Portsmouth.

A "secret file" of strange goings-on is available now for free download. The Dark Tide Dossier is a flash fiction collection containing clues as to what might happen over the coming weeks.

"Cursed City is a massive project," says project director Roy Hanney. "It starts off with the finding of a strange picture during Free Art Friday, and evolves into a story about the occult, curses, murder and witchcraft. It's good fun as part of Portsmouth's annual Dark Fest celebration of all things macabre."

As a transmedia experience, the story unfolds through different media including flash fiction, online posts and face-to-face meetings over a period of three weeks.

"This is the first time a transmedia story has come to Portsmouth," says Roy. "Who knows what will happen!"

Part-funded by Arts Council England, the story incorporates live performance, work by local artists, and a treasure hunt for clues across the city. Based on local writer Matt Wingett's Portsmouth-based novel The Snow Witch, the events in Cursed City: Dark Tide tell a new story that occurs after Matt's book has finished.

"I'm very excited about the project," says Matt. "In the project's early days, I helped co-ordinate a team of writers to develop storylines. Then I stepped back and gave them the reins. Cursed City: Dark Tide is entirely theirs, but using ideas from my novel. I'm as intrigued as everyone else to see how it unfolds!"

Roy Hanney says "It will all kick off this weekend. It's going to be quite a ride!"
