Local Care Home Offers Unpaid Caregivers Free Training & Support As New Data Reveals The Number Of Unpaid Carers Across The City Is Expected To Triple

Published: 12th October 2023 10:06

New research from Portsdown View Care Home, a local care home in Havant, and in partnership with Later Living Marketplace Lottie, has revealed that there will be a 277% rise in people across Portsmouth taking on caregiving responsibilities over the next 10 years.

Portsdown View have committed to support unpaid carers, with a number of training sessions being offered for locals who are juggling unpaid care responsibilities.

These will include: Moving and Handling, End of Life and First Aid Training. The courses will run for a week across October (Monday 9th - Thursday 12th) and will be open to anyone in the local area experiencing informal care responsibilities.

What’s more, to support anyone in the local area caring for a loved one with dementia, on Thursday 12th October, Portsdown View Care Home will be offering specialist dementia training in partnership with Training 2 Care.

Through a virtual dementia tour bus, participants will be able to experience what living with dementia could be like in a simulation exercise.

There will be three Dementia Tour Bus sessions running throughout the day on Thursday 12th October (in the morning, midday, and afternoon).

“We’re Setting Up Free Training and Resources for Unpaid Carers Within Our Community, So Unpaid Carers Feel Supported During This Crisis”, Shares Sarah Peach, Care Home Manager at Portsdown View Care Home:

“Now more than ever, Portsmouth’s social care sector is in urgent need of funding, as our research shows how many more people will take on unpaid caregiving responsibilities over the next 10 years.

People are living longer and requiring more support, whether that’s for a few hours each week, or more permanent, round-the-clock care. We need to come together as a community and raise awareness of the current support networks available for carers in the area, and advocate for increased resources for anyone who is struggling.

That’s why we’ve set up dedicated training and resources for the unpaid carers within our community. Everyone should feel comfortable when providing unpaid care, whether that’s ensuring you’re helping your loved one move comfortably, or understanding the type of care they need.

Together, we can navigate these challenging times and build a stronger network of unpaid care support, as well as placing more pressure on the Government to offer more support”, concludes Sarah Peach from Portsdown View Care Home.

The training sessions provided by Portsdown View Care Home will cover First Aid and Specialist Dementia Care. There will also be the opportunity for unpaid carers to learn about taking care of themselves too, both emotionally and physically.

Portsdown View’s unpaid carer support will begin from Monday 9th October and run up until Thursday 12th October.
