Clash Of The Titans! Sudbury Hockey Club V Sudbury Cricket Club, Colins Sports Column

Tension before playClash Of The Titans! Sudbury Hockey Club V Sudbury Cricket Club

The biggest sporting event of the week took place on the Cornard School Astro on Sunday 15th December as Sudbury Hockey Club took on their co-tenants at Friars Street, the Cricket Club, in a Hockey challenge match. After 5 minutes the visitors had shocked their hosts by taking a 2-0 lead partly because the Hockey Club goalkeeper couldn’t get his helmet to fit so wasn’t on the pitch! (Apparently they did the same last year only to be on the receiving end of a thrashing). The half time score was still a respectable 2-1 but most of the play was concentrated around the Cricket Club goalmouth.

 Contolled

Inadvertently, the Cricket Club started the second half with an extra man then compounded the issue with a botched substitution meaning they had 13 players on the field at one stage (it took the umpire ages to spot) so they were able to defend manfully despite a series of penalty area infringements resulting in short corners to the Hockey Club. In the end the Cricket Club held on for a 4-3 win with brilliant performances from Alan Supermac MacDiarmid at the back, David Chambers in the middle and Kenny Moulton Day in goal who was as mad, bad and dangerous as he used to be on a football field in times past.

 Sudbury Cricket Club

The Hockey club were magnanimous in defeat (albeit I’m not sure they all realised quite how many men/women they were playing against) and we all retired to the Friars Street bar for a pint and a sausage sandwich. Proper sport!
