About The Quay Theatre
Over the years the Quay Theatre has acquired its own entity and charitable trust status and celebrated its 30th birthday last year. Today The Quay is a thriving, multi-purpose arts centre home to several organisations and clubs with a multitude of activities going on at all times.
The Sudbury Dramatic Society still stages six shows a year at the Quay, including the pantomime, whilst the Sudbury Musicals Society puts on two productions annually. Internationally renowned professional touring companies also perform regularly at the Quay’s impressive 125-seat auditorium.
However, there is much more to The Quay than theatre. The cinema shows a wide range of films from Hollywood blockbusters – The Artist being the latest – to independent films from around the world. The cinema can also be hired out for private screenings, as can the auditorium and other areas, including the bar. The Quay’s musical events cover all genres from rock to classical and everything in between. Audiences with celebrities, which over the years have featured Griff Rhys Jones, Georgie Fame, Paul Daniels, Jacqui Dankworth, theatre actor and director David Benson, to name but a few – are some of the highlights of the Quay’s calendar.
Numerous organisations are based at The Quay including dance, drama, and social clubs for people of all ages. Another big attraction is its costume department, where members of the public can hire theatrical dress for special occasions. The relaxing bar area, complete with a balcony and patio overlooking the River Stour, is the perfect place to relax with a drink or two.
“The Quay, as well as having high quality productions and shows, is so much more than being a theatre. It is a real community amenity providing a location and facilities for so many local people and organisations, it is a key part of the local infrastructure which needs to be supported and protected,” added Mrs Murphy.
