Cantate Domino - Sing to the Lord - Saturday 9 March at 7.30pm
The recently refurbished Holy Cross Church at Felsted is the ideal venue for Cantate Domino a concert by Granta Chorale, a chamber choir with a growing reputation for beautiful singing and varied programming.
The centrepiece of the concert is Domenico Scarlatti's Stabat Mater written in 1715. The work is surely one of the most sumptuous and compelling settings of this 13th century Latin hymn, which describes in rhyming verse the grief and suffering of Jesus' mother Mary at the foot of the cross. Scarlatti wrote for ten-part choir, enabling him to explore many different groupings and inter-weavings of voices to create wonderful textures and harmonic effects. The music is full of emotion - by turns mournful, poignant, grief-struck, tender and angry, ending with a bravura Amen section.
This baroque masterpiece shares the programme with sacred pieces from the same era by Monteverdi and Lotti as well as more modern repertoire by Eric Whitacre, James Macmillan, Poulenc and the choir's conductor Janet Wheeler. There is much to enjoy in this varied concert.
The lovely acoustic at Holy Cross Church makes a perfect setting, where you can be sure of a warm welcome.
