More Racing Action From Ampton On Sunday
Suffolk News
The Bonhams-sponsored Mens Open Race – the only East Anglian qualifier in a 15-leg series culminating in a Hunter Chase Final at Cheltenham on May 1 – is the highlight of the Suffolk Point-To-Point meeting at Ampton, near Bury St Edmunds, on Sunday April 14.
A total of 74 horses have been entered for this six-race fixture which gets under way at 2.00pm with a nine-entry Members Race and runs through until 4.55pm when the Open Maiden Race, which has 14 possible combatants, comes under orders.
The steeplechase action will be preceded by two pony races restricted to jockeys under 16 years of age. These will take place at 1.00pm and 1.20pm around the undulating chase course but bypassing the obstacles.
Ravethebrave heads a 17-strong entry for the Bonhams Mens Open. This represents a drop in class for the Alan Hill-trained gelding who has contested hunter chases in his last three starts, giving Hill’s son, Joe, an initial National Hunt victory at Fakenham prior to solid placed efforts at Leicester and Newbury.
His main rivals are set to be the Newmarket-trained pair of Court Red Handed and Foulstons Ruler. Court Red Handed has been a model of consistency this term and went down by just a head on his previous Ampton appearance while the classy Foulstons Ruler should be all the fitter for his pipe-opener at Higham on Easter Saturday.
Bay To Go, who was trained within sight of the course when winning here in January, has won his only two starts since subsequently being sold for what now looks a bargain £6,000. He can return ‘home’ to complete a four-timer in the 18-entry Club Members Race.
Filibuster, from the Chediston, Suffolk yard of John Ibbott, also scored at this course’s previous fixture and, after a signalling a return to form when third in a big field at High Easter last weekend, looks the pick of the seven Restricted Race entries.
Ampton is four miles north of Bury St Edmunds just off the main road to Thetford, the A134, post code IP31 1NS. Approaching from Bury, follow the signs for Thetford from junction 43 of the A14 then turn right at the pub in the village of Ingham. The course entrance is barely 100 yards down this road.
Admission will be charged at £10 per head with under 17s free.
