World Book Night takes place on Tuesday 23 April and aims to encourage people who don’t regularly read, to pick up a book or visit their library. As well as a series of events round Suffolk, volunteers will also be gifting a selection of World Book Night Books to people who they feel would benefit most.
Shona Bendix, Chair of Suffolk Libraries, said: “World Book Night is a great way of getting everyone involved and thinking about books and encouraging people to read more regularly and hopefully improve literacy. As always our library staff have come up with some great events and ideas to get involved in the event and I hope people will enjoy taking part.”
The following events are being planned by Suffolk Libraries for World Book Night:
- Great Cornard Library are holding a book market event on 25 April where people who have chosen to ‘gift’ a World Book Night book will each be talking about the book that they are gifting and around 200 people from local organisations will have the chance to choose books to take away. The library will then organise another event in May when people can meet up and swap their books.
- Gainsborough Library—will stay open until 9pm and host a pirate theme. There'll be pirate crafts, face-painting and a treasure hunt where the Bookstart Bear pirate will also make an appearance. From 7-9pm there'll be pirate activities for teens and adults, refreshments and support and advice with learning to read. Pick up a free book.
- Westbourne Library will be linking up with Gainsborough library from 7-9pm to celebrate with an evening dedicated to the pirates of Treasure Island. Don’t get the black spot – visit us for pirate activities and books and pick up a free copy of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (while stocks last!)
- Rosehill Library—The Bookstart Bear pirate will appear between 4-5pm. Visitors should come dressed as a pirate, and get ready to join in with pirate crafts and a treasure hunt.
