Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra have been invited to play on several occasions in recent years at St. Peters Church, Sudbury in Suffolk.
The works being played are:
DVORAK: The Noonday Witch (based on a Slavic folk tale which tells of the fate of a naughty child in the hands of an unwelcome visitor). ELGAR: Cello Concerto (a much loved work which reflects the passing of an era, after the First World War). TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No 4 in D Minor ( one of his most popular, powerful and thrilling orchestral works).
Performers who will be in Sudbury:
Conductor: Richard Laing is one of the most sought-after and versatile young conductors in Britain;
Cello soloist: Richard Jenkinson is one of the Midlands' leading cellists, a member of CBSO and several other orchestral and chamber ensembles.
THE ORCHESTRA:
Founded in 1941 to raise money for war charities, Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra has developed into one of the finest non-professional orchestras in Britain, with a repertoire that includes the mighty symphonies of Mahler, Shostakovich and Bruckner as well as popular music for stage and screen.
Players are drawn from all walks of life throughout the West Midlands; for most, music is a form of relaxation, whilst for others it is a stepping stone in their musical careers. Based at The University of Birmingham's Elgar Concert Hall, Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra has played in many venues throughout the Midlands and beyond, including Birmingham Symphony Hall and Town Hall, St. John's Smith Square in London, and Lichfield, Coventry, Worcester and Wells Cathedrals.
