FREE GUIDED TOUR OF CLARE CASTLE AND CLARE MARKET, Saturday 30th July 2016
11:00 AM
A free tour of about 1.5 hours, guided by volunteers from Clare Ancient House Museum, to two of Clare's most important features.
The Castle's grounds, now occupied by Clare Castle Country Park, include its inner and outer baileys alongside the Stour.
Castle history will explain its origins, its most important era, and then its ruination by neglect and the coming of the railway.
The market was at its most important and its greatest size when the Castle was at its height. Learn where the market cross (big enough for 125 schoolchildren) was, and about a mysterious cellar.
Part of the initiative for free walks and tours in Clare, and also part of Suffolk's Year of Walking.
The car park charge is £2 for more than 1 hour.
