Colin’s Restaurant Column For The India, North Street, Sudbury

There is an Eagles song from the 1970’s called “New Kid in Town” and in Sudbury town there is indeed a new kid…

Although Sudbury and surrounding area is very well served for both restaurants in general but specifically Indian/South Asian establishments, there’s always room for something new and exciting and the India restaurant, right in the centre of town in North Street, is most definitely that.

As soon as you walk in the door there is a very different feel to the atmosphere of a usual “Indian” with its contemporary décor and furniture including some quite funky chairs which Lorna’s kids, who joined us for dinner, found acted a bit like rocking chairs. There is a very amusing take on the usual Indian “flock” wallpaper but the lighting, table decoration, crockery and cutlery are more upmarket London bistro than standard town Indian. There is also a lunchtime “Tapas” menu which is a great idea if very Camden Town

There are the usual classics and standards on the menu but these are heavily supplemented by many dishes we’d not seen on an Indian menu before (always a good sign of something new and exciting) including Squid Sheza and Scallops in a gently spiced sauce.

After the obligatory poppadum’s and pickles, we tucked into some excellent appetisers. Lorna opted for some very succulent Tandoori Chicken whilst Penny opted for Chicken Pakora which was not the usual chicken, veg and sauce in filo pastry type stuff more “Chicken Tikka and Hash Browns combined” (her description not mine).

One of the nice things about the menu is that there is a “hotness” indicator with little red chillis indicating degrees of heat. Jack and I opted for very similar “one chilli” starters mine a wonderfully tasty Prawn Bhaji on Puri (a sort of lightly fried fluffy bread) and Jacks similar but with King Prawns which he declared “very good” praise indeed for a man who doesn’t waste words.

For our main meals, Lorna chose her favourite Butter Chicken with its buttery, yoghurty, creamy sauce. I think it was the yellowist (almost custard looking) Butter Chicken sauce I have ever seen but Lorna declared it lovely. Penny being very brave opted for the two chilli Garlic Chilli Chicken which although quite hot was not completely overtaken by the chilli’s so still almost delicately spiced. Jack the Madras monster thoroughly enjoyed this version of his favourite dish. I was in experimental mode so ordered a dish I’ve never seen before Rangeela Kana, a mixture of lamb and chicken tikka and spinach cooked in a “warmish” sauce with ginger and fenugreek. It was a complete delight, aromatic to the nose, delicate to the tongue but warm enough to cause a glow to the forehead (or in my case these days fivehead).

Lorna and I shared a really excellent pea and egg filled special rice whilst the kids added a naan (one plan and one cheese). We also supplemented the main dishes with a Sag Aloo (spinach and potato bhaji) together with my favourite Brinjal (aubergine bhaji) the latter of which was quite one of the best I’ve ever eaten.

There was not a scrap of anything left by the time we’d finished and even better the food was served with a complete absence of anything floating in ghee or oil which can be both visually and texturally off-putting.

The waiters were charming and attentive and the owner Luthfur Rahman was delighted to tell me that the India had just achieved the highest rating possible for food hygiene within the first 2 months of operation.

Although there is much competition locally, the India looks like it has everything it needs to succeed. Lorna, the kids and I will definitely be back and I suggest you give it a try too. Our meal for four including a pint of Cobra each came to an exceptionally reasonable £85 so not only good food but good value for money too!
